Chapter 17

AURELIA

Every cell in my body screams at me to run but each muscle freezes me in place. I struggle to my feet, surreptitiously kicking Luc to wake him but he doesn’t move a jot.

"What’s wrong, Ebon?" he drawls.

"I am not Ebon."

"Like I said, I’m going to prove that you are." Vel pulls himself to stand and steps over Cam’s prone figure to reach me, passing the dying blaze.

Now? "I see why you didn’t drink," I say.

"The three of them don’t know when to stop. Some of us have more self-control. Maybe you should thank me? Who knows which one would start pawing you."

"They wouldn’t."

He cocks a brow. "You think a drunk, lustful dragon stops at licking faces? At least you know I won’t touch you in that way."

My breath shudders. "Good. I’m tired. I’ll retire now before they wake again."

Vel doesn’t stop me from walking into the shadows towards the house, but with each step I take away from the dragons towards the cabin, I wait for a large hand to grab me.

Vel disabled his friends for a reason.

As I make my way to the verandah, Vel’s slow footsteps move closer. "Aurelia."

Pausing, I turn and look straight into his eyes for the third time tonight. He’s stooping so we’re face to face.

Shit.

Go back to the others.

"You’re clever enough to know what happens next, Aurelia," he says. "You have a choice whether to come willingly on my back or travel the same way as last time."

"Pick me up in your paws and I’ll scream."

"Scream and I’ll shut you up." Menace coats his words. "Unpleasantly, not by tainting your drink."

If I’d known the level of pissed off this dragon would be, I’d never have chosen to do something that stupid. "Vel. Sorry. You’d threatened to hurt me, and I was scared. That’s why I put the powder in your drink."

"You’re lucky the others were here when I caught you, because when I’m near to dragon form I don’t listen to the man inside." He moistens his lips and straightens. "And Cam had already attacked me."

I frown. "Is this your way of blaming me for your behavior? ‘I’m a dragon, I get annoyed and hurt people sometimes’ doesn’t excuse you throttling me."

"You think I’m looking for an excuse? I don’t give a shit what happens to you." He jerks his chin. "If the First-Born have any sense, they’ll kill you."

The ground seems to move beneath me. "They won’t."

"I know." He takes hold of my hair and begins to wind it around his fingers. "But if they see you for what you really are, they’ll have no choice." I gasp out as he yanks my head back. "What would I need to do for you to let that Ebon darkness out?"

I wince as he yanks tighter. "Hair pulling? Really? That’s what the little boys did at school."

With a sneer, he drops my hair and steps away leaving a stinging pain on my scalp. "I can do much more but need witnesses before I really try to provoke you.
